What your AMH is telling you
In women, AMH is made by the small growing follicles in the ovaries. It plays a role in folliculogenesis — the maturing of eggs each cycle. Levels are barely detectable at birth, rise to their peak after puberty, then decline steadily with age until they become undetectable at menopause.
Because it mirrors the number of antral and pre-antral follicles, AMH is used clinically to assess ovarian reserve — the size of your remaining egg pool — and to anticipate how the ovaries might respond to stimulation. It is also used as a surrogate marker for antral follicle count in the assessment of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and in estimating time to menopause.
AMH is stable, but not the whole story
Serum AMH stays relatively steady across the menstrual cycle, with larger swings seen in younger women. It can be lowered by combined hormonal contraceptives. Crucially, AMH describes egg quantity, not egg quality — so it is always read together with your age, medical history, clinical examination and other findings.

Indian laboratories report AMH in either ng/mL or pmol/L. To move between them, multiply ng/mL by 7.14 for pmol/L, or divide pmol/L by 7.14 for ng/mL. This calculator handles both.

What is AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone)?
AMH is a hormone produced by the small follicles in the ovaries. Its level in the blood reflects ovarian reserve — the pool of eggs a woman has remaining. Levels are highest after puberty, decline gradually with age, and become undetectable around menopause.
What is a normal AMH level?
For the 20–45 age group, an AMH of 2.19–4 ng/mL is categorized as satisfactory and above 4 ng/mL as optimal. 0.3–2.19 ng/mL is considered low and below 0.3 ng/mL very low. The laboratory reference range on the sample report is 0.133–6.653 ng/mL.
What does a low AMH level mean?
A low AMH suggests a reduced number of remaining follicles (ovarian reserve). In the low band (0.3–2.19 ng/mL) the anticipated antral follicle count is 4 to 10. AMH reflects egg quantity, not egg quality, and is only one part of a fertility assessment.
Does AMH predict whether I can get pregnant?
No. AMH is a marker of ovarian reserve and of the likely response to ovarian stimulation. It does not measure egg quality and is not a standalone predictor of natural conception. Results should be interpreted alongside age, medical history, and clinical examination.
How do I convert AMH between ng/mL and pmol/L?
Multiply ng/mL by 7.14 to get pmol/L, or divide pmol/L by 7.14 to get ng/mL. For example, 0.911 ng/mL is about 6.5 pmol/L. This tool accepts both units.
Do AMH levels change over time?
AMH is relatively stable across the menstrual cycle, with larger fluctuations seen in younger women. Over the years it declines with age, and it can be temporarily lowered by combined hormonal contraceptives.
